Another important piece of the puzzle as a photographer is photo editing or post processing. You've worked hard to capture the photos in the field and now it's time to bring the RAW files to life but we often avoid it as it can be overwhelming knowing what to do or where to start.

This introductory session will go over the basics of using Lightroom and Photoshop helping to overcome that hurdle. I'll take you through my simple process showing you how I use both programs. Bring your laptop with photo editing software installed (preferably with Lightroom and Photoshop) to work along on the provided examples as well as on your own images.

I look forward to helping you develop or refine your photo editing process so you can level up your photography!

September 14th-16th & 17th-19th  - Yellowknife Aurora Chasing Tours (NWT)

Untitled photo

Visit Yellowknife and the far North of Canada to photograph the Northern Lights during peak fall colour and the darkest nights of September!

Event Cost: $1095 + GST

There are two events to choose from:

* September 14th -16th We will meet at 2pm on the 14th and wrap up very late on the 16th (possibly up until 2am on the 17th) making for 3 nights of aurora chasing!

* September 17th -19th We will meet at 2pm on the 17th and wrap up very late on the 19th (possibly up until 2am on the 20th) making for 3 nights of aurora chasing!

What is included?

Aurora Photography and peak fall colours in the Northwest Territories! Professional photography instruction & expert guidance from a certified guide and licensed NWT tourism operator. This event is timed to the darkest nights of September so we will have no additional light in the night sky making for enhanced aurora shooting conditions!

We will chase the Northern lights three nights in a row to a number of locations in and around Yellowknife.

What is NOT included in the event?

* Accommodation - Contact me for recommendations. We will have a central meeting place close to everyone's accommodation.

* Transport - Car pooling may be available so please get in touch if you are interested in that, but be prepared to organize your own rental car should that possibility not be available.

* Travel, medical & equipment insurance. I highly recommend you purchase these before embarking on this trip, especially to cover yourself in case you have to isolate due to covid 19 and will therefore not be able to participate. Refunds will not be issued for reasons due to Covid-19 (although a transfer to a future event may be an option) - having adequate coverage is essential.

* Food/drink

* Your flights and travel to Yellowknife, NWT.

What should I bring to the event?

DSLR/Mirrorless camera, wide angle lenses, tripod, filters, camera bag, cold weather clothing - lots of layers, mitts, beanie/toque, insulated boots, thermals, down jacket, rain jacket, face/neck warmer, lots of spare batteries, spare memory cards, headlamp & plenty of energy! I suggest bringing the widest fastest lens that you can bring for capturing the aurora as your most important piece of camera equipment. Ask me for more suggestions! (telephoto lenses are also nice to bring as we will photograph on afternoon outings to stretch the legs and edge of the day light at sunset as well).

Will we be doing any hiking to locations to photograph?

Yes! Along Ingraham Trail and around Yellowknife there are a few small hikes that are low intensity and short distance which we will explore. Be ready with appropriate footwear and clothing for any weather just in case!

What are my transportation options for getting to and from the event?

We will be meeting at 2pm in Yellowknife on day 1 of the tour at a central meeting place. Make sure to rent a vehicle to get around in. Carpooling may be available among our group depending on individual comfort levels and current restrictions in effect at the time of the tour but be prepared either way.

What is the weather like at that time of the year?

September is brisk to mild in Yellowknife with temperatures ranging from 3-14C (37 - 57F). The lakes are still unfrozen so we can catch beautiful reflections of the night sky and fall colours.

What is our group size?

The maximum group size will be 6 participants.

Enjoy some images from what this time of year brings in the Northwest Territories below.

" I recently attended a photography workshop of Nick Fitzhardinge’s. It was a wonderful experience and I must credit the truly extraordinary landscape of the area and Nick’s skills as a photographer and guide for its success.

Nick’s understanding of photography is exemplary and he was able to spot gaps in my knowledge of which I was not even aware. His recommendations were always presented respectfully and I came away from the workshop with a much better understanding of landscape photography than I had brought to it. Nick’s knowledge of the area and it’s photographic potential is exemplary as well.

He knows the most attractive viewpoints and the best possible times for visiting them. I am extremely pleased with the photographs that I took and I know that they would not have been possible without his guidance.

Nick’s love of photography and the mountains is apparent, as is his joy in being able to share that love with others. I would not hesitate to recommend one of Nick Fitzhardinge’s photographic workshops to anyone  "
