Photograph multi-colored glacial lakes, pristine wilderness & soaring peaks on these guided day hikes in the Lake O’Hara area of Yoho!

Event Cost: $375 + GST

Dates: July 9th & July 16th

What to expect

A full day! We meet before 8am in the Lake O’Hara car park so as to catch the 8.30am bus to Lake O’Hara. We will then spend the day exploring and photographing along the incredible trail system built by the Lake O’Hara Trail Club and Lawrence Grassi, returning to catch one of the last two buses of the day out.

A moderate level of fitness is required. Our walking distance will range from 6 – 10km with an elevation gain & loss of approximately 300 metres to reach the different areas in the region at an easy going pace with many stops throughout. We will make sure to pack our bags with lunch, water, snacks, & weather appropriate clothing along with our camera gear so making some lens & tripod sacrifices might be in order to keep the weight of our packs reasonable. Hiking boots are essential and poles are highly recommended.

I am a licensed professional guide with current first aid and advanced wilderness first aid certifications & have taken many prior trips in to the Lake O’Hara region. This workshop is suitable for all levels of photography experience as there will be many one on one opportunities throughout our time together. I will be by your side providing all that I know and love about landscape photography.

The group size is limited to 5 participants.

More information is available by contacting me here. I look forward to hearing from you!

*An August date will also be available at a later time. Contact me to secure a place on a wait list for it!

Visit Yellowknife and the far North of Canada to photograph the Northern Lights during peak fall colour and a full moon event!

2 Events to choose from:

* Friday September 9th - Monday September 12th (3 nights)

* Tuesday September 13th - Friday September 16th (3 nights)

What is included?

Aurora Photography, a full moon and peak fall colours in the Northwest Territories! Professional photography instruction & expert guidance from a certified guide and licensed NWT tourism operator.

We will chase the Northern lights three nights in a row to a number of locations in and around Yellowknife. There are two events, one on September 9th-12th & the other September 13th-16th. Make sure to select the dates that you want upon checkout.

What is NOT included in the event?

* Accommodation - Contact me for recommendations. We will have a central meeting place close to everyone's accommodation.

* Transport - Car pooling may be available so please get in touch if you are interested in that, but be prepared to organize your own rental car should that possibility not be available.

* Travel, medical & equipment insurance. I highly recommend you purchase these before embarking on this trip, especially to cover yourself in case you have to isolate due to covid 19 and will therefore not be able to participate. Refunds will not be issued for reasons due to Covid-19 (although a transfer to a future event may be an option) - having adequate coverage is essential.

* Food/drink

* Your flights and travel to Yellowknife, NWT.

What should I bring to the event?

DSLR/Mirrorless camera, wide angle lenses, tripod, filters, camera bag, cold weather clothing - lots of layers, mitts, beanie/toque, insulated boots, thermals, down jacket, rain jacket, face/neck warmer, lots of spare batteries, spare memory cards, headlamp & plenty of energy! We suggest the widest fastest lens that you can bring for capturing the aurora as your most important piece of camera equipment. Ask us for our suggestions! (telephoto lenses are also nice to bring as we will photograph edge of the day light and the moon too).

Will we be doing any hiking to locations to photograph?

Yes! Along Ingraham Trail and around Yellowknife there are a few small hikes that are low intensity and short distance which we will explore. Be ready with appropriate footwear and clothing for any weather just in case!

What are my transportation options for getting to and from the event?

We will be meeting at 2pm in Yellowknife on day 1 of the tour at a central meeting place. Make sure to rent a vehicle to get around in. Carpooling may be available among our group depending on individual comfort levels and current restrictions in effect at the time of the tour but be prepared either way.

What is the weather like at that time of the year?

September is brisk to mild in Yellowknife with temperatures ranging from 3-14C (37 - 57F). The lakes are still unfrozen so we can catch beautiful reflections of the night sky and fall colors.

What is our group size and are there any travel requirements?

The maximum group size will be 6 participants. Participants may be required to submit a self isolation plan in case of exposure to covid during travel. That is the current procedure. It is an easy application. More information can be found here: https://www.gov.nt.ca/covid-19/en/services/vaccination-testing/self-isolation-plan

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

A one of a kind “Banff stargazing” experience - during this weekend photography workshop you will photograph The Icefields Parkway & David Thompson Country (including Abraham Lake) from unique vantage points and experience the Canadian Rockies during the night as we chase any opportunities to photograph the milky way, the aurora, noctilucent clouds, constellations, planets, & zodiacal light!

Our base near the Icefields Parkway in the heart Banff National Park will allow us to follow in the footsteps of David Thompson, one of Canada's greatest explorers (also known as 'Koo Koo Sint' by the local indigenous people which fittingly translates to 'the stargazer').

This workshop will cover a range of shooting conditions including sunset, night time, and morning light but we will focus on night photography and the techniques and strategies needed for you to become a proficient astrophotographer no matter your current skill level or camera gear. All the while you will have access to ask questions of your two instructors, Kahli April and Nick Fitzhardinge.

They will share tips on composition and technical settings to best suit the dark environments to reveal the magic of the milky way & the mountains! What’s Included: Personalized photography Instruction from two experts in the areas of astrophotography & landscape photography.

Testimonials

" I recently attended a photography workshop of Nick Fitzhardinge’s. It was a wonderful experience and I must credit the truly extraordinary landscape of the area and Nick’s skills as a photographer and guide for its success.

Nick’s understanding of photography is exemplary and he was able to spot gaps in my knowledge of which I was not even aware. His recommendations were always presented respectfully and I came away from the workshop with a much better understanding of landscape photography than I had brought to it. Nick’s knowledge of the area and it’s photographic potential is exemplary as well.

He knows the most attractive viewpoints and the best possible times for visiting them. I am extremely pleased with the photographs that I took and I know that they would not have been possible without his guidance.

Nick’s love of photography and the mountains is apparent, as is his joy in being able to share that love with others. I would not hesitate to recommend one of Nick Fitzhardinge’s photographic workshops to anyone  "
